A simple step to being happy involves simply listening to your inner therapist. That’s right. All you have to do is stop, listen, and take action. You have a little voice that is constantly trying to take care of you but you keep ignoring it.
The other day my 8 year-old son asked, “Mom, why do you tell us to listen to you all the time but you don’t listen to you?” I looked at him confused and replied, “Huh?” He proceeded, “Well, yesterday you said that you had to go to bed early but today you are complaining because you were up too late. And the other day you said you wanted to go workout but instead you stayed home and did work.”
Simple Exercise to Being Happy
This simple exercise to help move towards being happy is so simple and obvious that it almost seems ridiculous to write about. But it is necessary. We all have selective hearing when it comes to taking care of ourselves. Just think if we listened and followed through with the loving messages we tell ourselves on a daily basis. We are constantly “parenting” ourselves but refuse to listen.
When you tell yourself to turn off the computer, turn it off. When you tell yourself to go for a walk, go for a walk. When you tell yourself to eat something healthy, eat something healthy. When you tell yourself to rest, rest. When you have the urge to play, play! Think about your inner child. These are loving things that your inner child/spirit WANTS to be doing. We come into this world to experience it, to have fun, and to be happy. This doesn’t stop just because we aren’t little people anymore.
