If you want to be happy, be more helpful. Doing good makes you feel good. It is that simple AND it is backed by science. Our society equates happiness with getting things, when in reality we all feel better when we are giving. However, so many people say they don’t have time or money to give.
I recently accepted the Ice Bucket Challenge and made a donation to the ALS Association. It is amazing how viral this fundraiser is going. There has been a lot of debate about this on social media; however one thing that can’t be debated is the benefits of giving back. Studies show that donating and giving back activates feel-good chemicals in our brain. I can attest, as it did feel good to make a donation and participate. After, I thought, “How can I continue to do good in my daily life?”
I wanted to find ways to combat the excuses of not having time and money. Fortunately, I found two apps that fit perfectly into my lifestyle and don’t require more time or money! Check out these two apps:
With the “I Can Go Without” app, skip one of your daily luxuries and donate the money you would have spent to a selected charity. I brewed my own coffee today instead of buying one and donated the cost to the Center for Mind-Body Medicine. You can make healthy choices like skipping dessert or alcohol, walking instead of taking the bus, etc. You can even create your own campaigns and get your friends involved.
The Charity Miles App is another favorite. You can donate to charities without even opening your wallet! All you have to do is select your favorite charity and get moving! The app has a GPS tracker that logs your miles. Bikers earn 10¢ a mile and walkers and runners earn 25¢ a mile! How cool is that?!?!
So, there are two incredibly easy ways to give back without breaking your bank and adding more to your schedule! Helping people = happy people!
