If you want to change your life then stop your negative thinking.
Did you know that whatever you were just thinking about you probably thought about yesterday? Did you know that the thought you are having right now is just one of the 60,000 some thoughts you will have today? Yep, everyday you THINK anywhere between 12,000 and 60,000 thoughts! AND wait for it….98% of those thoughts are THE SAME EXACT THOUGHTS YOU HAD YESTERDAY!!! Wait! Don’t lose interest yet…80% of those thoughts are negative, yucky, bad thoughts.
Can you believe that?! Seriously, the majority of our days are spent thinking a bunch of crap. Stuff that drains us and makes us mentally and physically hurt! So, in the words of Bob Newhart: “STOP IT!”. (btw – watch that video I just linked to if you haven’t already – it’s awesome!)
If you can’t “stop it”, then you need some tools to help you.
The greatest thing about all of this is you can change your life simply by changing your thoughts. It is really that simple. One of the first things to be mindful of is not getting attached to our thoughts. The minute we attach a belief to them, we get stuck. Lets look at some words from one of my favorite authors and healers, Byron Katie:
“A thought is harmless unless we believe it. It’s not our thoughts, but our attachment to our thoughts, that causes suffering. Attaching to a thought means believing that it’s true, without inquiring. A belief is a thought that we’ve been attaching to, often for years.
As long as you think that the cause of your problem is “out there” –as long as you think that anyone or anything is responsible for your suffering—the situation is hopeless. It means you are forever in the role of victim, that you’re suffering in paradise.” – Byron Katie “Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life”
Start Changing Your Negative Thoughts Now! Here are some rules to implement:
1. Stop yourself when you hear red flag words
Red flag words are negative words like “should”, “can’t” and “never”. These words are like a punch in the face and release bad chemicals in your body which deplete you of energy. Recognize when you use these words, discard and replace with good thoughts immediately!
2. Stop believing everything you think.
Separate yourself from your thoughts. The real you is not that voice you hear in your head, you are just the person hearing it. Just sit back and watch your thoughts go. See your thoughts as random data flying in and out all the time. These thoughts aren’t there for the keeping, they are there for questioning and processing.
3. Stop thinking you need people’s approval
The only approval you need is from yourself- PERIOD. “What other people think of you is none of your business” (Paulo Coelho)…even if it is family and friends. They don’t need to support your behavior or like what you are doing. If it bothers you that they don’t, then you are holding onto some guilt or shame. This is YOUR problem, not theirs. There is only one person that needs to like you – YOU.
4. Stop thinking life is happening to you
If other people and situations are causing you problems then good. These people are presenting an opportunity for you to heal something that bothers you about YOU. Life is happening FOR you. There is no reason for you to sit and try to figure everything out. You do not need to know why things are the way they are or why people do the things they do. It is a complete waste of time. All that matters is how you choose to take in the world around you.
5. Stop blaming others for your situation
When you blame others, you give away your power to change your situation. Taking responsibility for your beliefs and judgments gives you the power to change them. Holding resentment and grudges makes you a hostage.
6. Stop seeking love
You don’t need to look for love because you already have it. When you look externally, you completely miss the key to inner healing. You have everything you need to heal. You already have love. A lot of love that you need to start giving to yourself.
7. FEEL what your thoughts do to you
Be in tune with what your thoughts do toyou. If it makes you feel bad, then it is bad, and you should change it. What you give attention to, will manifest. If you think bad, you will get bad.
8. If a thought is negative, change it IMMEDIATELY!
The minute you think something negative, stop and change the thought immediately. Do not let it hang around. If you say, “I will never be happy” reverse it to say the exact opposite, even if you don’t belief it right now. Say, “I am happy”- keep saying it, writing down, and look at it all the time!
